My name is Monica and I am the current Vice President for the Society for Injured Riders (SIR). I was the Vice President last year and was a director the year prior to that. I have been a member since 1999 and helping injured riders is a passion of mine.
I was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in 2004 and suffered significant injuries requiring the surgical removal of one of my ribs to alleviate nerve pain and pressure. It sure is humbling to be in a position that requires others to help with all of those simple things I did on my own like getting to and from the bathroom, getting into bed, paying my daily bills, doing housework and preparing meals etc. I did not need the assistance of any organizations but was glad to be part of one, had I needed it.
I work at a law firm in the Okanagan and have seen significant injuries suffered by people who ride motorcycles, along with the difficulties we all face as riders in getting back up on our feet and back into the saddle; the fight required to get what you need to recover and the gaps in what may not be provided through insurance. These are some of the reasons I have been a member for many years and why I chose to be on the board of directors for SIR. To advocate for injured riders and provide support wherever it is needed.
I love our poker runs, our long rides and the camaraderie within our Society and our involvement in other associations events to help promote them as well. I also love our Boogie Bash event and the family that we have created through that, over the many years we have held that event in Kelowna.
You do not need to ride, ride a Harley or know a rider to become a member. Anyone can be a member. Membership helps support those riders who are injured (and their families dealing with those injures) who may not have the means or support to help them through the process and help them recover.
I hope to get to know every person, that is or becomes a member of SIR, on a personal level. We love family here and that is how we view the Society for Injured Riders, as our family.
Hope to see you out there.
Monica
